BASIC FUNCTION
The Lead Designer is the key industrial designer representing our function on projects that are large in scale and/or complexity. They have developed their talent and experience within a category. They also have a deep understanding of the ID vision and tenets that allows them to lead the vision for a project team. Through this position, they may develop to a management level via formal training, coaching, and developing junior designers assigned to them.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities:
Be the key design expert/leader in a given category, or special assignment working across categories, i.e. suites.
Build internal and external relationships to strengthen their understanding of the category and how they can influence innovation.
Lead large, complex design projects from concept generation through implementation.
Understand the consumer so that functional aspects can be considered along with business objectives, aesthetic needs and cost objectives.
Provide design and technical guidance to the team and junior Industrial Designers.
Participate in accomplishing the day-to-day activities of the Industrial Design department.
Coordinate team meetings, functions, and time schedules within their ID function.
Coordinate activities with outside industrial design consultants (contracts, timelines, etc.).
Support NPS Planning with planned activities and concepts on an annual basis.
Major Tasks:
Work very closely with all new product development departments, especially Engineering, Marketing, Purchasing, and Manufacturing, in a team atmosphere achieving new levels of creativity and innovation with their key projects.
Lead new product development concept development activities, prototyping activities and project cost adherence.
Plan, organize and give project presentations to management.
Learn, understand and implement new approaches to concept development and design research.
Continuously explore and develop new methods of model making and presentation techniques.
Maintain current awareness of consumer and competitor product offerings including product design trends in both the U.S. and in foreign markets.
Develop and maintain familiarity with new materials and processes.
Maintain a keen understanding of the manufacturing processes that are especially associated with your category responsibility – work closely with our BF factory team.
Profile:
May have one or more of the following expertise that would be unique and desirable to a given category:
Furniture - Talent and aptitude with wood and other materials, mechanical sensibility, sensitivity to designing to meet broad consumer preferences including traditional style
Interior Design – Architecture – talent and aptitude to deliver creative solutions for the bathing environment as a whole and understand how this breaks down into new product design
Sanitary – Materials expertise in ceramics, strong human factors understanding, highly refined, three-dimensional styling capability.

RELATIONSHIPS AND CONTACTS
Supervisory Relationships:
Reports to Studio Director
Dotted line responsibility to Program Manager of Category for project work only.
May manage direct reports and/or supervises designers working on projects in category.
Organization Relationships:
1. Works alongside Engineering, Marketing, and Manufacturing in a team environment.
External Business Relationships:
Has contact with vendors and design consultants.
Attends industry tradeshows and seminars as needed to maintain awareness of competitor products, designs, and overall consumer product design trends.
Attends industrial design seminars and courses as necessary to maintain professional skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor Degree from accredited university or college of design with academic emphasis on product design.
Experience in interior design, architecture, furniture, lighting, consumer research and/or other related field.
Typically has 6 – 10 years of design experience to obtain this level of competence.
