Design Impact is looking for self-motivated, multi-skilled designers who genuinely want to work full-time in Indian communities affected by poverty. Fellowships are six month to one year placements with an Indian organization. Design Impact supports the full cost of training, travel, insurance, medical expenses, room and board, and project costs.
We are currently seeking fellows for the five following projects:
Quality Education and Skills Training Alliance (Quest Alliance): Bangalore
Quest’s core strength is designing educational technology and particularly Information Communications Technology (ICT) to improve quality and relevance of education and training in India. They offer high-quality, affordable educational content, reaching educationally under-served youth in ways unimaginable a few years ago. Design Impact will work with Quest to update and improve their current training course based on student inputs. The goal of this project is to increase the percentage of students who become successfully employed.
Deep Griha Society: Pune
Deep Griha offers quality medical care to low-income communities in Pune through its clinics and provides wrap-around care through programs such as child development, orphanages, income-generation for youth and women, and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns. Design Impact will partner with Deep Griha to analyze and improve their community nutrition program which currently provides meals in three Pune slums. The goal of this project is to improve the health of Deep Griha’s constituency, specifically reducing the number of local women suffering from anemia and water borne illnesses.
Appropriate Rural Technologies Institute (ARTI): Pune
ARTI develops, standardizes, popularizes, and commercializes innovative rural technologies, and has multiple fully-developed agricultural, agri-horticultural, and energy technology products. Design Impact will partner with ARTI to refine their Sarai cooking system, from manufacture to use, in order to improve functionality, marketability, and reduce cost of production. The goal of this project is to increase unit sales, and thus reduce cooking related illnesses in users.
Manav Sadhna: Ahmedabad
Manav Sadhna’s projects span from women’s livelihood to health and hygiene to schools for street children, with a focus on the needs of slum dwellers in Ahmedabad. Design Impact will partner with Manav Sadhna to promote the usage of sanitary napkins in urban slums and rural villages through micro-enterprise initiatives. The goal of this project is to improve health through increased adoption of sanitary napkins and to generate income in resource poor areas.
National Innovation Foundation (NIF): Ahmedabad
NIF is a government funded initiative that locates, promotes and diffuses rural innovations throughout India. Design Impact will work with NIF to assess and develop their portfolio of bicycle related concepts and prototypes. The goal of this project is to impact rural economies.
